Tough to price e-cars affordably: Maruti

NEW DELHI: Maruti Suzuki, which accounts for one out of each two vehicles sold in the country, has stated that it will be challenging and "very difficult" to worth electric vehicles affordably and release them at levels of Rs Five-6 lakh — a price-point that's the middle of the Indian car marketplace.
The remark via the country's largest carmaker comes at a time when the federal government is pushing for electric car technology very aggressively, and has requested corporations to either work in opposition to e-cars via 2030, or "be ready to be bulldozed".

Maruti Suzuki MD & CEO Kenichi Ayukawa stated that making affordable electric vehicles remains some of the largest demanding situations for auto corporations, particularly as batteries for the automobiles are "very expensive" and there's no public charging infrastructure. "Affordability is a concern, and we can't seem to find answers," Ayukawa told TOI here. "There are still cost concerns... Maruti's Japanese father or mother Suzuki has signed an MoU with compatriot Toyota for introducing electric automobiles in India via 2020, and is also developing a plant for lithium-ion batteries in Gujarat. They would also look at construction of allied technologies as Suzuki will produce electric automobiles to be used via Maruti while also supplying "some" to Toyota.


Ayukawa stated that Maruti is lately learning whether or not it must electrify models from its current vary, or if all-new vehicles want to be introduced. "It is still not clear.
