TUTICORIN: With the state govt’s handling of the May 22 anti-Sterlite protest coming beneath severe grievance, minister for info and publicity Kadambur Raju on Sunday held out an assurance that his govt will not permit Sterlite Copper Smelter to function once more. He said the state govt isn't in a position to factor a government order to permanently lock down the manufacturing facility, as an attraction filed by means of the government against the functioning of the arguable manufacturing facility in 2013 is pending in the Supreme Court.
“Except during one or two occasions, the district management had all the time supported the anti-Sterlite protest by means of providing permission. We (state govt) have firmly taken a choice to not permit the manufacturing facility to function once more,” the minister advised reporters. “The state govt and the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board have rejected Sterlite control’s request to resume its licence in April 2018,” he said.
Asked in regards to the protesters’ demand for a GO to prevent the operation of the manufacturing facility, Kadambur Raju explained that the attraction pending in the Supreme Court was a legal hurdle.
“The manufacturing facility control might be willing to restart the operation. But we've got taken a policy stage resolution to not let the manufacturing facility resume work,” he said.
The minister interacted with IAS and IPS officials and mentioned measures to carry down police presence in Tuticorin because the Section 144 of CrPC was lifted. He said the ministers may just not seek advice from the coastal the town until Sunday morning as Section 144 was in pressure. “Cases had been registered against everyone who violated it,” he said.
Appeal pending in apex court legal hurdle’
Asked in regards to the protesters’ demand for a GO to prevent the operation of the manufacturing facility, Kadambur Raju explained that the attraction pending in the Supreme Court was a legal hurdle.
