BJP is using NRC to polarize voters ahead of LS polls: Congress

GUWAHATI: The Congress on Monday accused the BJP-led executive of the usage of the NRC update process to 'polarize Assam on religious lines' forward of the Lok Sabha polls through aside from names of other people belonging to a religious minority group from the register in spite of ownership of relevant documents on citizenship.

"There has been an increase in serving notices of doubtful voters and foreigners to people, especially belonging to the minority community, despite possession of documents by such people. We have also collected ground reports of NRC officials not doing verification of documents properly. The motive is to exclude as much people as possible from this particular community," mentioned Rajya Sabha MP and state Congress president Ripun Bora.

He added that even after the Supreme Court allowed panchayat certificates as linkage documents, especially for married ladies, there were allegations that NRC officials are not accepting them. "The apex court has laid down guidelines for updating the NRC. But we have come across anomalies in following these guidelines. This is being done to polarize the state on religious lines and to benefit BJP," he mentioned.

Earlier this month, NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela had informed the Supreme Court that about 1.five lakh names, which were included within the phase draft of the NRC released on December 31 last 12 months, might be excluded from the general draft. The final draft might be released on July 30. Hajela cited errors in inclusion of those names within the draft as some of the causes for dropping the names. In the phase draft, names of one.9 crore other people out of 3.29 crore have been included.

Bora mentioned Congress has determined to struggle the criminal combat on behalf of people who were ignored of the NRC in spite of possessing relevant documents of citizenship. "We want a solution to the problem of illegal migrants under the Assam Accord, which has fixed March 24, 1971 as the cut-off date. Anyone who entered Assam after this cutoff should not be included in the NRC. But why exclude people who have documents to prove their linkages prior to or up to the cutoff date. Congress will provide all legal help to Indian citizens who are not included in the NRC," added Bora.
