Shivaji memorial: Maha plans shorter statue

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government has modified the peak specifications of the proposed Chhatrapati Shivaji Memorial off the Arabian Sea, in a bid to scale back the price of the challenge, respond to an RTI query has printed.

In the new design, the government has lowered the peak of the warrior king's statue through 7.5 metres, even though the sword he wields shall be taller than within the original design.

However, those adjustments is not going to alter the overall peak of the statue, which would be 121.2 metres. The peak of the entire structure, together with the pedestal, can be 212 metres, the government stated in its answer.

"The height of Chhatrapati Shivaji's statue has now been reduced to 75.7 metres from the earlier 83.2 metres," it stated.


But in order to take care of the statue's overall peak of 121.2 metres, the length of the sword has been raised from 38 metres to 45.5 metres, the government stated.


"The height of the pedestal has been reduced to 87.4 metres from the earlier 96.2 metres. This change in the pedestal's height will save Rs 338.94 crore," it added.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the root stone of the challenge in December 2016.


The contract for the challenge was awarded to Larsen & Toubro for Rs 2,500 crore in March this 12 months. The state government had pegged the total challenge price (phase I and II) at Rs three,600 crore.
