Thiruvananthapuram: An exhibition of paintings that captures the myriad moods of the village, Thasrak, the far flung village of Palakkad which used to be the environment for O V Vijayan’s magnum opus Khasakinte Itihaasam, is on show on the Lalithakala Academy Art Gallery, Vyloppilli Samskrithi Bhavan.
Nineteen paintings by way of artist Salim Babu are showcased on the exhibition titled ‘Mindscapes of a Reader’. According to Babu, the exhibition is a tribute to the legendary Vijayan and his novel.
Babu stated that the paintings have been in line with the unconventional. “There hasn’t been a singular in Malayalam literature which has influenced readers like Khasakinte Itihasam. I have read the unconventional repeatedly and liked it. I have only attempted to transform with paintbrush what O V Vijayan portrayed thru words on this timeless classic,” he stated. “The text itself supplies a lot of pictures and I worked at the foundation of the ones observations. Chethalimala, Koomankaavu, residents and palm trees of the village are all part of the paintings,” he stated. All the paintings, in line with primary incidents depicted in the novel, lift footnotes that includes authentic quotes of the respective scenes. The complete 19 paintings have been completed in about six months.
This is Babu’s 3rd exhibition of the paintings. The first one used to be held at Thasrak in Palakkad in 2016 and any other used to be arranged in Kollam in 2017. Artist B D Dathan inaugurated the exhibition on January 1. According to organizers of the exhibition, a majority of the visitors have been readers and fans of the unconventional.
Poet Sasidharan Kundara, who visited the venue, stated that the exhibition offers a feeling of nostalgia for the readers who love the paintings.
Entry to the exhibition is free and open on all days from 9:30am to five:30pm. The exhibition will conclude on Tuesday.
