Bar use of ‘mental’ & ‘mad’ jibe: Psychiatry body to poll panel

HYDERABAD: The Indian Psychiatry Society (IPS) has written to the Election Commission urging it to bar politicians from the usage of phrases like ‘mental’ to describe fighters of their Lok Sabha election campaigns.

“The phrases utilized by politicians and individuals with social accountability are discriminatory, inhuman and degrading over the rights of individuals affected by mental issues,” stated chairperson Dr B N Raveesh and co-chairperson Dr Suresh Bada Math in a letter to the ECI.

The IPS stated it had seen many politicians and individuals with political affiliations the usage of the terms ‘mental instability’, ‘mad’, ‘manasik asvastya’, ‘mental hospital ko bejna hai,’ and so on.

“These are the individuals with massive accountability to conduct themselves as leaders of the people. Their feedback shall be covered through print and visible media, including social media,” the Indian Psychiatry Society stated in its March 23 letter. Urging the ECI to caution politicians, the IPS asked the EC to carry the matter under election code of conduct.
