HYDERABAD: The ruling TRS’ campaign blitz with a battery of netas, MLAs and two ministers came a cropper with the party-affiliated municipal staff’ union shedding the distinguished Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) union polls. The drubbing came as a larger surprise as TRS has corporator power of 99 and it’s the first defeat since formation of state of Telangana. GHMEU lost with a huge margin of one,317 votes of the total 4,260 votes polled. The previous union elections held in 2012, GHMEU secured recognized union status with a majority of one,200 votes.
GHMEU president U Gopal attributed the defeat to some GHMEU leaders, who labored for BMEU. “Some leaders, particularly in the central committee in Abids and Khairtabad workplaces backstabbed us. Some top leaders, who assured support also labored in favour of BMEU.” He said he'll soon submit a report back to TRS management.
BMEU president Ok Shankar, who won elections said, staff and staff taught the ruling get together a lesson. “The TRS government saved postponing elections for past four years fearing loss. The elections have been carried out after a top court order,” BMES president Ok Shankar told TOI.
