MUMBAI: A "major" tragedy used to be prevented on the sea-facing Marine Drive with the timely detection of a inclined spot which will have caved in, municipal officials stated on Monday. A civic authentic stated that the spot on the arterial road will have opened as much as disclose a "huge" crater-about 20x7 ft deep, were it no longer the timely detection.
A civic authentic stated that the Old Marine Drive road, because it is called, used to be a cement-concrete stretch which used to be later asphalted. "On Monday, we noticed that there was an unsettled portion on a stretch of this road," stated the authentic. "To pre-empt any eventuality, we decided to take up a trial pit and dig up the road. We were surprised to find a crater beneath the road which seemed innocuous on the surface."
Work on filling up the crater used to be taken up at once, stated the authentic.
Kiran Dighavkar, assistant municipal commissioner of ward 'A', which has jurisdiction over this house, stated, "The hollow underground was possibly spurred by erosion of soil as the sea is adjacent to the road. Also, it could be due to tidal effect."
