CHENNAI: The Madras prime court on Tuesday stayed an FIR registered against journalist Mathew Samuel and 6 others for circulating a video alleging the involvement of Tamil Nadu leader minister Edappadi Ok Palaniswami in a theft at past due CM J Jayalalithaa’s Kodanad estate and deaths of some other people hooked up to it.
Justice Anand Venkatesh handed the order while admitting a plea moved through Samuel searching for to quash the FIR registered against him through the Central Crime Branch (CCB) police, Chennai. The judge then adjourned the plea after four weeks.
According to Samuel, the CCB of the Chennai police registered an FIR against him and 6 others on January 11 for alleged offences beneath sections 153A (selling enmity between different teams), 501(1)(b), 505(1)(c), 505(2) (Statements conducing to public mischief) read with 120(B) (prison conspiracy) of the IPC.
He submitted that neither a press conference performed through him right here on January 11 nor the documentary printed through him made any remark on the grounds of faith, race or homeland to constitute offence beneath Section 153.
“The documentary relates to simplest Palaniswami and nobody within the video makes any remark or act prompting enmity amongst two teams,” he added.
Pointing out that neither Palaniswami or his council of ministers had most well-liked any criticism against him, the petitioner sought after the court to stay further court cases on the FIR till the general disposal of the present plea.
