KOLKATA: Kolkata Municipal Corporation on Monday came up with a stall on wheels type for Gariahat hawkers who had misplaced their makeshift stalls that have been gutted in a nighttime blaze 8 days in the past. A gaggle of KMC officials took the 8X four feet stall, made of corrugated sheet fitted with fibre wheels to Gariahat as a specimen and showed it to the hawkers of the realm seeking an acclaim for the design.
Mayor Firhad Hakim reached the spot round night and held a gathering with Gariahat Indira Hawkers union and Ballygunge Hawkers Association. Later Hakim stated that he had a chat with the hawkers at the new type stall and want to give them 24 hours to decide whether or not majority of the hawkers have been in favour of the new type. “If they accept our type stall, we will manufacture extra such stalls and distribute those to the hawkers in stages,” Hakim stated.
Mayor stated all efforts have been being taken to make sure that the new stalls on wheels have been manufactured maintaining in thoughts the fire hazards. “We have already banned plastics and conveyed it to the hawkers that no plastic sheets will be allowed within the hawking zones. This apart we won’t allow electric wires to be hung dangerously within the hawking zones and posting a threat. I have asked the CESC government to arrange for an underground block electric meter that will deal with the electrical energy need of the hawkers in Gariahat,” Hakim stated while addressing a hawkers rally at Gariahat intersection.
Hakim on Monday shaped a committee comprising MMiC Baiswanor Chatterjee, MMiC Tarak Singh and phase of KMC officials who will keep touch with the hawker union leaders in Gariahat until all hawkers got the stalls on wheels uniform in measurement and form. A KMC legit informed that those stalls have been being manufactured at a civic body run workshop at Entally. “Each of these stalls will cost us Rs 35000 and 50,000,” stated a KMC legit.
Despite highest of efforts a bit of the hawker union leaders on Monday were not certain about hundred percent acceptance of the KMC made stalls. “A piece of our hawkers remains to be in catch 22 situation. They need larger area as advent of stalls on wheels will shrink their area and the business may fall,” stated a Gariahat hawker union leader.
