MUMBAI: Taking stringent action against dewatering pump operators for failing to function the pumps when required, the BMC on Monday determined to penalise the Chamdawadi nullah pump operator at Khar after 4 dewatering pumps stopped functioning owing to loss of diesel. Dewatering pumps are used to tackle localised waterlogging in various parts of Mumbai.
A Rs five lakh positive has been imposed at the operator and in addition a showcause notice has been served on him asking him why he will have to no longer be blacklisted.
A BMC official from the stormwater drain department said that the contractor had been requested to keep 100 litres of diesel spare however then owing to Sunday's rainfall it all used to be used up and subsequently on Monday when the city again witnessed a heavy downpour, the pumps may no longer be pressed into operation right away.
Local corporator Swapna Mhatre said that the world is a chronic waterlogging spot and subsequently it is essential that de-watering pumps are pressed into operation right away when required.
