'Very surprised' to find judges' appointment cleared in less than 48 hours: CJI Ranjan Gogoi

NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi on Friday said he was once 'very surprised' to find the advice for appointment of 4 SC judges getting cleared via the federal government and President issuing warrants of appointment in not up to 48 hours.


Justices Hemant Gupta, R Subhash Reddy, MR Shah and Ajay Rastogi were on Friday sworn in as judges of the Supreme Court, taking its strength to 28.


The Chief Justice administered the oath of administrative center to the 4 judges.


The president had on Thursday given his assent to the advice of the Supreme Court Collegium for raising Gupta, Reddy, Shah and Rastogi, who were leader justices of different high courts, as apex court judges.


The Supreme Court collegium headed via Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and comprising its four-senior maximum judges, had on October 30 really useful to the Centre the names of the 4 for elevation as judges within the apex court.
