CHENNAI: A 44-year-old guy on Tuesday stabbed his estranged wife in a circle of relatives court on the Madras top court campus, allegedly pissed off over the divorce court cases dragging for greater than a decade. Saravanan, an MTC bus motive force who attacked Varalakshmi in the open court room around noon, was nabbed by way of a few attorneys and passed over to police. A court later despatched him to jail. The girl is recovering on the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.
Police said the separated couple had been preventing a divorce case for the previous 10 years in the circle of relatives court and Saravanan was scuffling with a dowry harassment case filed by way of Varalakshmi at a magistrate court in Tambaram.
At 11.50am, a police officer said, Saravanan and Varalakshmi had been seated in the First Additional Family Court where Judge Ilangovan was listening to some other case when the attack passed off. A lawyer in the court said, "I saw the man walking towards where his wife sat. All of a sudden, he opened a goggle box, took out a sharp-edged knife and struck Varalakshmi. She responded quickly and spun away but suffered an injury below the neck."
Senior recommend V Kannadasan, who was with a client, said: "Some lawyers caught hold of him before he could attack the woman again. They bashed him up and informed police."
‘Stabbing on court premises severe breach of safety’
A workforce of the Security Chennai Police, present on the front, rushed in and took the suspect into their custody, whilst others alerted the ‘108’ ambulance. Varalakshmi was despatched to GH.
The incident is noticed as a significant breach as it passed off in the ‘top safety zone’. The circle of relatives court hall where the incident passed off is secured by way of the state police and litigants are allowed in most effective through Esplanade gate after acquiring a valid pass. All visitors to the court are manually frisked and it's not recognized how the person managed to carry a knife in.
A police officer said Saravanan of Siruvanjur close to Sriperumbudur in 2009 applied for divorce from Varalakshmi and so they separated. The court ordered Saravanan to remit 1.65 lakh as maintenance to Varalakshmi and he filed a petition against it. The petition came up for listening to on Tuesday.
The High Court police registered a case beneath IPC Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 294 (B) (abusing), 506 (II) (prison intimidation) and 228 (whoever deliberately offers any insult or causes any interruption to any public servant) against Saravanan.
Family court lawyer and Congress worker T K R Sudha said, “The selection of divorce cases had been incessantly increasing in the circle of relatives court. There are 8 circle of relatives courts but posts of 3 judges are vacant. It is tricky to put off cases briefly.”
