India lose tennis events amid tense ties with Pak

NEW DELHI: India on Tuesday misplaced the webhosting rights of two premier world tennis tournaments – Junior Davis Cup and Fed Cup – scheduled to be held in the capital in April.

This is the second such action based on India’s denial of visas to Pakistani shooters for the ISSF World Cup held in Delhi last month, in the aftermath of the Pulwama terror attack. On Saturday, the United World Wrestling (UWW) had stripped India of its webhosting rights of the Junior Asian championships, days after asking all its affiliated federations to prevent coping with India’s wrestling frame (WFI).

Both tennis tournaments will now be held in Bangkok.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) – the game’s governing frame – reallocated the championships to the Thai capital following a request through its Asian counterpart (ATF). The junior Davis meet was scheduled from April Eight-13 whilst the Fed Cup fits have been to be played between April 15 and 20 on the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA) complicated.

The ITF’s resolution was basically based on two counts. According to assets in the All India Tennis Association (AITA), the primary was the absence of a written ensure from the Indian government that the travelling Pakistani contingent for the Davis Cup would be granted access visa. A total of 16 teams in the under-16 age class, together with Pakistan, have been anticipated to compete in India for the Davis Cup, incessantly known as the ‘World Cup of tennis’.

The 2nd reason why was the ongoing closure of Pakistan’s air area following the Balakot air strike, which might have made the flight journeys of visiting teams for the tournaments a lot more exhausting, for the reason that they would were compelled to take alternate routes and long flights to go into the Indian airspace.

Both these factors led AITA creating chilly toes, It is learnt that the nationwide federation knowledgeable ATF about its inability to host the occasions, which, in turn, contacted ITF and asked for a change in venue.

“We all know that the AITA wouldn’t have organized for a written enterprise from the ministry of exterior affairs (MEA) and the ministry of house affairs (MHA) that the Pakistani tennis contingent would be allowed to compete in the junior Davis Cup. Their names have been there in the festival checklist, so they have been coming. Pakistan’s female tennis gamers, too, have every now and then participated in the Fed Cup. We couldn’t have ensured visas for them both, so the development would have in the end been taken clear of AITA. The government is not at all keen to offer any enterprise at the present time,” the supply advised TOI.

TOI, in its version dated March 6, 2019, had reported that India was more likely to lose webhosting rights of a number of world sports activities occasions after the refusal of visas to the Pakistani shooters. The resolution has brought habits of world sports activities in India to a digital standstill.
