Ahmedabad: Water scarcity in Gujarat is throwing up ironical water wars. In an odd case, the Dalit group of Bharatpur village in Kalol in Gandhinagar district has alleged being threatened and criminally intimidated for denying water from their segregated borewell to the Thakor group after it began to expire of water.
Girish Parmar, a paan store proprietor and key consultant of native Dalit group, filed an FIR on Thursday towards Fatehsinh alias Popatji Thakor, a member of village panchayat, accusing legal intimidation and casteist slur. Kalol taluka police have filed an FIR under sections 504 (intentional insult with intent to impress breach of the peace) and 506 (2) (legal intimidation) and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
As in line with case details, a segregated borewell used to be sanctioned for Dalit group in Soja Bharatpur, a settlement of Dalits and Thakors just about 1 km away on the outskirts of Bharatpur village, from the welfare grant for the SC group on March 23, 2011. The borewell used to be sanctioned to resolve insufficient water supply right here because of low power of water supply.
“Then, the Dalit group consultant made up our minds to lay two separate traces of water to share the water supply with Thakors too. Last yr, when ground-water stage were given depleted, we made up our minds to adopt even handed practices and provide water to Dalit and Thakor households best as soon as in the morning. This didn't move down neatly with the accused who continuously resorted to create ruckus in Rohitvas (Dalit settlement) questioning how can Dalits decide to curtail water supply,” stated Bharat Parmar, former village panchayat member.
This simmering stress intensified two months ago. “When water stage depleted vastly, we stopped water supply to the Thakor settlement two months ago. Agitated by this, Thakor brought on his group women to stage a protest at sarpanch Daksha Patel’s area on March 21 the place a number of women resorted to breaking their earthen water-pots,” stated the FIR.
