In his first public remarks after he was the surprise choice for MEA portfolio, Jaishankar defended PM Narendra Modi’s invitation to Bimstec leaders for his swearing-in, pronouncing that while there have been positive issues of Saarc, the previous grouping of countries had energy. "Saarc has certain problems... even if you put terrorism aside, there are connectivity issues," he stated.
