BHUBANESWAR: The state govt could collect only Rs eight,196 crore as penalty from mining leaseholders in opposition to the demand of Rs 17,576 crore.
Sunday midnight was the deadline to collect the penalty imposed by the Supreme Court on 152 iron ore and manganese lessees for unlawful mining.

The penalty was imposed by the apex court docket on August 2, as mining operation in these blocks was carried out without forest and environment clearances, beyond the accredited space and in way over what were allowed.

The court docket had asked the state govt to recover the volume by December 31. The govt issued demand notices to the leaseholders accordingly and warned that it would suspend mining operation in the event that they did not submit the volume.
