BHUBANESWAR: State govt's proposal to set up 2d campus of Ramadevi Women's University inside Utkal University premises caused robust resentment amongst scholars and teachers of the latter. Students of Utkal University on Wednesday staged protest in entrance of the college gate opposing the move and threatened to intensify the movement if govt continues with the proposal.
State govt on Tuesday constituted a four-member committee below the chairmanship of Utkal University vice chancellor S M Patnaik to identify 30 acres of land in the present campus of the college for recommending allotment to the second one campus of Ramadevi Women's university. The govt has been requested to give its report by way of February 15 to take the final choice.
Three scholars' associations of the university submitted their memorandum to the vice chancellor expressing their objection to the proposal. "I have received the memorandums from the students and will convey the message to the government," Patnaik stated.
Utkal University, one of the most premier universities of the state, was set up on a space of 400 acres however through the years round 40 acres land has been encroached upon.
"As such the campus of Utkal University is not adequate and it is really surprising that why government got this weird idea of setting campus of another university inside it. Ramadevi Women's University is a unitary university and it should have a bigger and separate campus instead of adjusting them in the campus of Utkal," stated Santosh Tripathy, president of Utkal University Teachers' Association.
Ramadevi Women College, which was an affiliated faculty of Utkal University, was upgraded to college in 2015. It has 46 ladies's schools affiliated to it.
"Ramadevi Women's University's campus should not be confined to 30 acres area rather the government should provide them a sprawling campus like any other educational institute of importance. We strongly oppose the proposal of its campus inside Utkal University, which will dilute the purpose of the varsities moreover restrict the growth of both institutes," stated Soumya Ranjan Mohapatra, a scholar of Utkal University.
