Mum: '12,000 tonnes of debris spewed by sea'

MUMBAI: Around 12,000 tonnes of particles and garbage was thrown out through sea along the Marine Drive promenade in south Mumbai all the way through the prime tide remaining week, the Bombay prime courtroom was instructed on Tuesday.

"Around 12000 tonnes of debris and garbage, thrown into the promenade during the high tide last week, has been cleared from Marine Drive by municipal workers," stated Shehzad Naqvi representing the petitioner.

City-based NGO 'Citizens Circle for Social Welfare and Education' had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in search of course to authorities involved to frame guidelines on garbage and particles disposal and its discharge into the ocean.


Naqvi instructed the HC that authorities are ideally supposed to discharge the rubbish or particles into sea at a farther distance from the sea coast.


A division bench of Justices A S Oka and Riyaz Chagla famous that the petition raises necessary issues and an urgent listening to was required.


The bench then posted the PIL for listening to on July 30.
