Free breakfast in some Corporation schools soon

CHENNAI: Akshaya Patra and the Greater Chennai Corporation on Monday rolled out the Kaalai Unavu scheme beneath which students in 23 corporation schools will be served unfastened hot breakfast ahead of classes each day.
Either upma or idli or pongal would be served to the scholars each day, stated a consultant of Akshaya Patra, an NGO.

As many as five,000 students would be lined beneath the scheme in the next one month, stated corporation officials.


Tamil Nadu governor Banwarilal Purohit and minister for fisheries D Jayakumar inaugurated the scheme for 1,000 students studying at Chennai Primary School and Chennai Higher Secondary School in Thiruvanmiyur and Chennai Primary School students in Thiruvanmiyur Kuppam.


"Within the next academic year, we plan to roll out the scheme to 20,000 students studying in several corporation-run schools. Akshaya Patra Foundation will cook and deliver the food at these schools at their own cost. The plan is to bring all corporation school students under this scheme so that they are well fed before their classes," stated Sudama Vipra Dasa of Akshya Patra Foundation.


There are 281 corporation-run schools in Chennai.
