Pune: BJP benches sitting MP for Girish Bapat

PUNE: Supporters of BJP MP Anil Shirole are miffed over denial of birthday party nomination to their chief, more so since Shirole had won the Pune Lok Sabha seat with record margin of three.15 lakh votes in 2014.

This is not for the primary time that the BJP has benched its sitting MP in Pune. The final time it came about was once 23 years in the past, in 1996. Interestingly, then too, the birthday party’s selection was once the similar — Girish Bapat.

Shirole had polled 5.69 lakh votes in 2014 — the best possible number of votes secured by means of any candidate in Pune within the Lok Sabha polls since 1952. The landslide victory was once attributed to the 2014 ‘Modi wave’, regardless that.

Speaking to TOI, an in depth affiliate of Shirole said the premature demise of senior BJP chief Gopinath Munde, who was once Shirole’s mentor, worked against him. “But after Maratha marches around the town final 12 months, we felt that it will now be not possible to ebb him out as he had the neighborhood backing,” he said.

The Shirole supporters have been, therefore, hopeful that he would have the ability to secure the birthday party price ticket for the 3rd time. But that didn't occur. And, interestingly, this has never came about in case of any BJP Lok Sabha candidate from Pune town.

In 1991, then BJP chief late Anna Joshi had created a history of varieties by means of registering the birthday party’s maiden victory within the Pune Lok Sabha seat, and that too against Congress stalwart late Vitthalrao Gadgil, who had won the sooner 3 elections (1980, 1984 and 1989) consecutively.

Anna Joshi’s victory was once important bearing in mind that in 1962 after which in 1984 veteran Jan Sangh chief Jagannathrao Joshi, famously known as “Karnataka Kesari”, had twice contested the Pune Lok Sabha seat, however the BJP had did not make inroads into Pune, then thought to be a Congress bastion.

Five years down the line, in 1996, “large killer” Anna Joshi was once denied price ticket in favour of Bapat, who was once then a tender MLA from the Kasba Peth meeting constituency, vacated by means of Anna Joshi for contesting the 1991 Lok Sabha polls.

Bapat misplaced the Lok Sabha elections in 1996 to the Congress’s Suresh Kalmadi, but this didn't pacify Anna Joshi. He was once so disappointed over denial of the birthday party nomination, that a 12 months later, he switched to the NCP and unsuccessfully contested the meeting election from Kothrud on an NCP price ticket, ending his political career in turmoil.

Shirole’s supporters can take solace in the truth that their chief was once now not the one one sidelined regardless of a stunning performance within the previous election.

Bapat, too, was once now not given the birthday party nomination within the subsequent 1998 Lok Sabha polls and had to wait till 2019 for his 2d probability. Instead of Bapat, the BJP in 1998 supported Suresh Kalmadi, who had defected from the Congress and had unsuccessfully contested as an Independent.

Similar was once the case of the BJP’s Pradip Rawat, who won the Pune Lok Sabha seat in 1999 in his first strive. He was once re-nominated in 2004, but never again.

A veteran RSS and BJP chief denied that there was once any “mindful” transfer in the back of the pattern of now not offering the birthday party nomination greater than twice to an individual regardless of admitting that it had critically hampered the method of nurturing of a robust birthday party chief from Pune over these years.

He said that not like Congress, which was once in power within the state, Centre, and the “local power centre” — the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the BJP came to power in these 3 elected our bodies very late. He said Congress leaders, together with Vitthalrao Gadgil and Suresh Kalmadi, had a robust keep watch over over the PMC and likewise had grown as national leaders. Hence, they got re-nominated by means of the Congress and each got elected to the Lok Sabha thrice. Other Pune MPs, together with Late Kakasaheb Gadgil (Vitthalrao’s father), Late Shankarrao More, Late Mohan Dharia, and Late SM Joshi have been additionally stalwarts and public leaders, he said.

“Barring exceptions like Jagannathrao Joshi, most of our applicants didn't have a national symbol and till not too long ago they had no keep watch over over town’s power centre, the PMC, to financial institution on and increase their management. Hence, we had to experiment by means of fielding new faces or altering our choices. But, now, things have changed. Strong public leaders will emerge from our Pune unit. Once this occurs, those who deserve will mechanically get re-nominated within the next election,” he said.
