Odisha: Passengers hail Centre’s plan to have Wi-Fi in all stations, security in trains

BHUBANESWAR: Passengers on Thursday welcomed the Centre's price range announcement to put in Wi-Fi facility in all stations and strengthen passenger security through fixing CCTV cameras in trains.
Finance minister Arun Jaitley in his price range announcement said all railway stations and trains can be supplied with Wi-Fi facility for information and leisure. "This will also enable people in rural areas, including women and youth, to access the internet and enhance their knowledge and skills," said a observation issued through the Railways.

Manoj Pradhan, a early life from Ganjam, said the set up of Wi-Fi in small stations like Ganjam and Chatrapur can be useful for the native youths to access web products and services totally free. "Our small stations were not coming under the Wi-Fi projects, but this announcement will cover our stations. It will help the youths to browse and download several documents and videos," he added.

East Coast Railway (ECoR) headquartered at Bhubaneswar has a total of 313 stations beneath its jurisdiction. It has already made around 60 stations Wi-Fi enabled until date.


Jaitley additionally announced that Indian Railways will arrange CCTV cameras across all stations and trains to reinforce safety and security of passengers. Around 250 passenger trains are plying within the ECoR zone day-to-day.


"It is very risky to travel alone with luggage during night time. Sometimes criminals loot and misbehave with the women and get down from the train. It becomes very difficult to find the criminal. Installation of CCTV and deployment of security personnel will create a sense of fear among the criminals," said Devirupa Samal from Bhadrak.
