Blast case convict granted one month parole

Coimbatore: I Abu Dhahir, a convict in the 1998 serial bomb blast case, has been granted one month parole on medical grounds. The Madras high court docket granted the parole to the 35-year-old guy —who used to be a member of the banned Al Umma outfit — from Wednesday to seek remedy for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disease.

“As in line with the HC order, we have now passed Abu Dhahir to his circle of relatives,” superintendent of the Coimbatore Central Prison M Senthilkumar advised TOI.


Abu Dhahir, who used to be sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for his involvement in the serial bomb blast in Coimbatore city, had finished his sentences in the Coimbatore Central Prison in 2008. Meanwhile, the high court docket’s Madurai bench had sentenced him to lifestyles in 2003 for murdering assistant jailor Jayaprakash in Madurai in August 29, 1997.


According to police resources, SLE had affected Abu Dhahir’s middle and kidneys and he used to be surviving on dialysis. “He used to be undergoing remedy in the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) and later in a non-public health center earlier than lodged in the Coimbatore jail. He used to be shifted to CMCH from the jail health center on November 24, 2011 after his condition worsened. Subsequently, his circle of relatives had approached the HC in search of remedy in a non-public health center. The state executive appealed towards the petition and a high-level committee and a group of doctors tested Abu Dhahir. They submitted a file in June 2012. After either one of his kidneys failed, Abu Dhahir’s well being worsened and the CMCH doctors beneficial remedy in a specialized centre for kidney transplant. He used to be admitted in a non-public health center in the city in 2012 and his well being condition improved. Though the jail department paid Rs eight lakh for his remedy, the health center claimed that the cost touched Rs 30 lakh. After the health center control approached the HC, the court docket directed the jail department to shift Abu Dhahir to the CMCH from the personal health center,” a police officer said.
