CM lauds artisans, offers monetary aid for exhibitions

Chennai: In a bid to promote the sale of state handicrafts merchandise and enhance artisans, leader minister Edappadi Okay Palaniswami on Thursday stated the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited (popularly referred to as Poompuhar) will arrange virtual fact showrooms at international airports and museums at a value of Rs 2.17 crore.

“The Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation has helped bring many small-time artisans beneath a single umbrella. Many artists who once struggled, are doing smartly now on account of projects by the company. The govt will enhance the craftsmen and lend a hand their merchandise get extra publicity outdoor the state and the rustic,” stated Palaniswami, after throwing open the ‘Artisans Day’ at Kalaivanar Arangam on Thursday, within the presence of his deputy O Panneerselvam.


Palaniswami also inaugurated five urban haats (shanty) for coaching and public demos of artwork works in Nachiyarkoil, Swamimalai, Thanjavur, Madurai, Vagaikulam and Kanyakumari. “More urban haats will probably be opened in different places across the state,” he stated.


Palaniswami allotted awards to 245 handicraft artists. Ten senior artists had been chosen for the Living Craft Treasure awards. “I'm grateful to people who made our artworks well-liked. The govt will offer Rs 25,000 to an artist if he wants to conduct an exhibition of his works in different states. If it's a world exhibition, the government will supply Rs 50,000 to the artist,” he stated.
