BENGALURU: Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) on Thursday threatened to invoke Esssential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) towards metro rail body of workers who're making plans to release an indefinite strike from March 22.
"Metro services have been declared as essential services under ESMA. Stringent action will be taken if anyone resorts to disrupting the Metro services" said Mahendra Jain, BMRCL, managing director. The warning comes within the backdrop of the decision given for a strike via Bangalore Metro Rail Employees Union (BMREU) to protest towards “non-recognition in their union, harassment of participants, lack of redressal grievance mechanism and contract labour device”. The workers had deliberate to stage demonstrations between March 7 and 21 in entrance of all stations, the corporate office in Shantinagar and administrative office in Byappanahalli.
However, the BMRCL government have disapproved the moves being made via the workers. "All metro rail employees are deemed to be public servants under section 90 of Metro Railway O&M Act 2002 so they are prohibited from taking any action which jeopardizes the Metro Services putting the commuters in difficulties and causing inconvenience to people" Jain said and added: "All arrangements are being put in place to operate the services and provide security to the passengers in the event some uninformed employees resort to such an unfortunate step.".
"Employees are advised not to get carried away by elements who are trying to mislead naive employees, disrupt operations and inconvenience people. Genuine grievances are being addressed by the grievance redressal machinery of BMRCL. The employees are advised not to resort to strike or to disrupt services or bring external forces on the management. If they do so it will be dealt with firmly, in the larger interest of people and patrons of Namma Bengaluru", Jain mentioned.
