Fitness enthusiasts deplore vandalisation of open-air gym

COIMBATORE: The unregistered open-air gym functioning on company land at Race Course used to be vandalised on Friday by a bunch of people.
Following the incident, gym regulars petitioned town company government against the ‘hooliganism’, saying it had been functioning for greater than 15 years and people from all walks of existence were loose to use it from 4am-9am and 4pm-9pm on a daily basis.

The gym, they stated, wasn’t registered and quite a lot of apparatus were purchased with the cash donated by a number of walkers and like-minded people in Race Course house.

“More than 500 people determine here day-to-day and nobody has the rights to damage it. By spreading rumours and destroying apparatus at the gym, they can't prevent people from coming here,” stated 46-year-old Shiva Kumar.

For 50-year-old A Sheik Dawood, the sight of broken gym apparatus used to be heart-wrenching. “Working out here had been my routine for a number of years. We installed our money and efforts to expand this facility,” he stated.

Shiva Kumar stated a few people, who claimed to be contributors of the ruling AIADMK, used to assemble money from the folk for the use of the facility. “When we questioned it, they abused us. They then started to threaten the folk coming to the gym. We by no means imagined that they would take the rivalry to this extent. This is a public space. Providing incorrect knowledge to government and destroying the facility can't be permitted,” stated C Angamuthu, a health enthusiast.
