BJD forms committee for Mahanadi, Polavaram

BHUBANESWAR: Intensifying its political focus on Mahanadi and Polavaram disputes, the Naveen Patnaik-led BJD on Monday formed a steerage committee comprising Rajya Sabha contributors Prasanna Acharya and Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, senior chief Debi Prasad Mishra and former Union minister Chandrasekhar Sahu.
BJD sources stated the committee will advise the party on its long term political route on the dual issues of state's dispute with Chhattisgarh over sharing Mahanadi water and with Andhra Pradesh over construction of Polavaram dam.

In the process, the BJD has given party works to Soumya and Chandrasekhar, who joined the BJD best lately. Acharya stated the committee will meet quickly to chalk out the strategy.

The BJD plans to additional accentuate agitation over the problem in the run as much as 2019 elections after the large response to party's 'Save Mahanadi campaign' from Jharsuguda's Sukhasoda village (where the river enters Odisha) to Paradip Port (where it merges with the Bay of Bengal) in May, BJD insiders stated.

The Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal has issued notices to the state governments of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra to appoint their representatives for adjudication of the dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh through August 6.


Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday wrote a letter to Union minister of environment, forests and local weather change Harsh Vardhan to forestall construction paintings of the Polavaram venture in Andhra Pradesh until problems pertaining to Odisha are resolved.
