Kovaipudur residents live in fear of burglars, anti-social elements

Coimbatore: The recent burglaries of their locality have left the residents of Kovaipudur a anxious lot. Last month, miscreants had struck at two houses in a span of 3 days, exposing the lack of security and policing in the space.
Another fear for the residents is the vacant plots with overgrown crops and abandoned outdated houses in the locality that experience turn into a haven for anti-social parts. To add to the woes, the police outpost in the locality had been mendacity closed for round 3 years.

Last month, burglars first struck at a house in the Q-Block of the locality when the resident had long past to meet his daughter, who used to be admitted to a medical institution for supply. Finding the entrance door of the home wide open, a neighbour knowledgeable the resident, who found a tablet, two cellphones, gold embellishes worth Rs 70,000 and round Rs 5,000 missing.

“The burglars broke open the entrance door lock, pried open the bureau door with a rod and looted the valuables. Our house would possibly were under their scrutiny for some time and so they must have known that we had long past to the medical institution,” said the resident, who didn’t wish to be named.

Two days later, burglars struck at any other house in the same block. “It happened on a Thursday when the Raghavendra Swamy temple situated near the home would see a big crowd. It used to be a well-planned act,” the resident said.

Following those incidents, residents said, police held a meeting with them and briefed them on safety measures. “They mainly asked us to install CCTV cameras at our houses. We didn’t see every other initiative from their phase,” a resident said.

According to N Hariharan, a resident of Q-Block, unidentified other people were steadily spotted in the vacant plots and abandoned houses in the locality. “When we confront them, they slip away silently,” he said.


Residents wanted the officials to revive the police outpost located on the entrance of the locality. The outpost used to be inaugurated in 2008 through the then city police commissioner, C Ok Gandhirajan. It used to function under B 14 Kuniamuthur police station. “The outpost functioned for a couple of years and then it used to be closed,”Hariharan said.


When contacted, a police professional said the department had close the outpost because of manpower crunch.


“At least four workforce are required to man the outpost. And we don’t have that many of us to spare. But we've got larger evening patrolling in the space” the professional said.
