Water may be released from AMR Dam if required: Bhaskar Moily

MANGALURU: Mangaluru town is not going to face any water crisis until the tip of May, said mayor Okay Bhaskar Moily.
“Water stored within the new vented dam at Thumbe might be sufficient for 47 days. Even if the water stage dips further, the city is not going to face any water shortage until the tip of May, since AMR Dam, which is at the upstream of Nethravati river, has 9.17 MCM of water in it. Water from AMR dam can be launched to Thumbe dam if required,” Moily said.

The new dam of 7 metres top in Thumbe in Bantwal taluk, with a most storage capability of 14.73 MCM, has water at a level of five.6 metres as on Friday. As water is at a level of five.6 toes, the dam has 8MCM water in it, and as in line with calculations of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) engineers’, it'll be sufficient for 47 days with out inflow.

The water stage on the new dam, which was once commissioned in December 2016, was once maintained at five meters until December, 2017. However, the water stage on the dam was once higher to six metres in January.

Mayor Okay Bhaskar Moily visited the dam along side MCC council leader whip M Shashidhar Hegde and MLC Ivan D’Souza, to ascertain the storage stage. Moily said the city is not going to face any water scarcity. “As on Friday, the water stage in Thumbe dam is 5.6 toes. It is sufficient for 47 days for Mangaluru. We will handle the water stage in Thumbe by means of freeing water from AMR Dam in accordance with the situation. Accordingly, electorate of Mangaluru might be getting uninterrupted water supply until the tip of May,” Moily said.

On repayment to be paid to villagers, whose land was once submerged after the rise in storage of water, Moily said the government has already launched price range for the same. “A complete 20.53 acres belonging to 28 villagers was once submerged when the water stage was once maintained at 5 metres in Thumbe Dam. The executive has launched Rs 7 crore and repayment to the music of Rs four crore has already been paid to 12 landowners. Meanwhile, for 36 landowners who misplaced 30 acres when the storage was once higher once more to six metres, the government has launched further price range of Rs 10 crore, and the process of paying repayment might be completed inside a month,” he added.

“Though the city won't suffer a water crisis, electorate will have to use water judiciously,” he appealed.
