China places 10 seismometers in Indian ocean

BEIJING: China has effectively positioned within the Indian Ocean ten ocean seismometers which are used to measure earthquakes, volcanic eruptions or using explosives.

China's 49th ocean expedition team on Sunday positioned ocean-bottom seismometers within the southwest Indian Ocean, with 5 more planned, state-run Global Times reported.

Fifteen ocean-bottom seismometers will be retrieved within the coming 12 months, Science and Technology Daily reported on Monday.

Ocean-bottom seismometers can operate for extended periods of time on the seafloor to assemble data from earthquakes and artificial vibrations within the deep sea.

Seismometer is used to measure the movement of the bottom caused by means of an earthquake, a volcanic eruption or using explosives.

The lifespan of a seismometer is from several months to a 12 months, earlier than being retrieved for further research.

This is the first time China has positioned seismometers within the southwest Indian Ocean's Junhui hydrothermal box, in line with Qiu Lei, head of the team's earth physics department, the report stated.

China has positioned seismometers within the three within reach hydrothermal fields which it reportedly named Longqi, Yuhuang and Duanqiao.

The new seismometers in Junhui have been positioned the place there used to be previously no ocean-bottom seismographic statement, Qiu used to be quoted by means of the Science and Technology Daily as saying.

The new seismometers have better battery capacities so they can operate for greater than a 12 months, Qui stated.

The findings of the seismometers, especially minor earthquakes which can be tricky to look at otherwise, will supply treasured data for the exploration of polymetallic sulphide and assist researchers perceive the structure of the area.

Research within the southwest Indian Ocean is generally misinterpreted by means of foreign media as army job. This is solely not the case, Hu Zhiyong, a research fellow at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences' Institute of International Relations told the Global Times.

"Every sovereign nation has the right to conduct scientific research in international waters, so their argument does not stand," Hu stated.

China's 49th ocean expedition started on December 6, 2017 on the research send Xiangyanghong 10, hoping to explore polymetallic sulphide deposits within the southwest and northwest Indian Ocean.

The expedition, with greater than 200 group of workers, would last 250 days, the report stated.

China secured contracts from International Seabed Authority (ISA) in 2011 to explore Indian Ocean for polymetallic sulphide ore and its research vessel has found out two hydrothermal areas and four hydrothermal anomaly areas in southwest a part of the sea.

Under the contract with the ISA, China Ocean Mineral Resources Research and Development Association (COMRA) were given exclusive rights to explore 10,000 square-km of seabed within the southwest Indian Ocean, in line with earlier experiences.
