NEW DELHI: Its once-traditional constituency in Kerala eluded the Congress once more, as the CPM regained the Chengannur seat as of late following Monday's assembly bypoll.
The Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate Saji Cherian won the bypoll with a margin of 20,956 votes over D Vijayakumar of the United Democratic Front (UDF).
The bypoll in Chengannur constituency of central Kerala used to be necessitated following the dying in January of sitting MLA KK Ramachandran Nair of the CPM. The seat witnessed a unprecedented three-point contest with the NDA also throwing in its hat.
The result of the byelection is widely being seen as a referendum on the performance of each the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF govt in the state and the Narendra Modi govt at the Centre, which has finished four years in office.
