GUWAHATI: City-based bike owner Arshel Akhter, who used to be appointed as Cycle Mayor of Guwahati via the Amsterdam-based BYCS, a company which promotes biking across the globe to reduce air pollution, has appealed to the state government to inspire biking a number of the masses. Akhter, along with other cyclists from the city, has submitted a memorandum to the state government to demarcate dedicated biking lanes within the town.
"Even though Guwahati has a growing population of people who have taken up cycling as a recreational activity, the number of people who use cycles to commute is very few. If people take up cycling to commute distances they are comfortable with, it will go a long way in reducing carbon emission, traffic congestions, and deaths due to traffic accidents. One's health will also improve," Akhter mentioned on the eve of World Bicycle Day on Saturday.
Akhter, who is the second one Indian to be appointed as mayor via BYCS, has already motivated many youths and elderly other people within the town to soak up cycles as their mode of communique. He mentioned it is very important for the sustainability of any town for its citizens to soak up non-fossil gasoline mediums of transport.
He mentioned probably the most recurrent reason cited via the general public for not biking continuously is that they are scared to take their cycles out directly to the city roads as a result of there are not any dedicated biking lanes. "Creation of biking lanes does not essentially mean expanding of current roads.
