Sri Lanka to tighten environmental law against waste, pollution

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka will make stronger its environmental regulation against rising industrial pollution, city waste disposal and illegal constructions, Cabinet spokesperson Gayantha Karunathilleke mentioned on Saturday.

Karunathilleke mentioned the government would amend the National Environment Act after the Cabinet of Ministers licensed a suggestion by way of President Maithripala Sirisena previous this week to instruct the prison draftsman to draft necessary law, Xinhua news company reported.


The new regulation would enable authorities to better cope with pollution issues and stern action can be taken against all the ones stuck polluting the environment.


Even although the regulation has been amended several times up to now, the necessity for further adjustments has been known with the intention to in finding solutions for urgent environmental issues as well as the ones that may rise up one day, Karunathilaka mentioned.


Planned adjustments to the regulation will quilt water pollution factories, city waste-related issues and issues led to by way of illegal buildings.
