Mining in Mandya forests driving leopards into human habitat

MANDYA: With the decrease in green cover and increase in rampant quarrying actions, human-animal struggle is on the rise in Mandya district.
According to woodland officers, 292 cases of wild animal intrusion and property-damage cases had been reported around the district in the recent past, and 471 in the ultimate three years. Livestock are the primary targets for leopards — 178 cattle and other home animals had been killed in such assaults.

The upward push in leopard population — each in hillocks and semi-forest areas in Mandya district — is causing unrest as persons are bored to death with leopards prowling in their areas, and continuously killing their farm animals too.

While woodland areas in Malavalli taluk are susceptible to elephant assaults, leopards are ceaselessly being spotted in KR Pete and Nagamangala taluks.

Repeated look of giant cats close to villages has been growing consistent fear among farmers, who are afraid to project even out to their agriculture fields.

As many as 54 farm animals had been killed in leopard assault in the district in 2018, of which 46 had been in Nagamangala on my own. In Malavalli, 38 farm animals had been killed. The woodland departments disbursed overall Rs 50 lakh reimbursement to farmers who had lost their cattle since 2015.

The woodland officers are attributing the advance to the short decrease in green cover and increase in quarrying actions in Mandya district. The area is comparatively a undeniable land, having little woodland cover. “Leopards used to are living and thrive in hillocks and semi-forest areas. These areas weren't intruded via people till the last few years. Now, quarrying units have made their manner into deep woodland and hillock areas, thereby grossly anxious leopards. That is why they're using human habitats,” stated a senior woodland officer, claiming anonymity.

Social activist Prof Hulkere Mahadevu stated that until reckless mining is stopped and ecological steadiness is ensured, wild animals keep using into human habitat on the lookout for food.
