“As of now, there are no instances registered against the 2 arrested persons. But we have showed that they're the husband and daughter of Thankachi who has robust hyperlinks with the mafia that poach elephants and smuggle tusks to north India. Thankachi has been absconding since 2014. We have arrested all the major accused in the case. We hope that the arrest of her closest relations will give leads about her whereabouts. We are in communicate with DRI to get extra main points,” said Sijo Samuel, Thundathil Forest Range officer.

According to a press release from DRI Kolkata, the duo admitted that they were sporting elephant tusks hid in the baggage without any proper paperwork. They also said that the tusks and ivory statues were procured from Kerala. Officials said that the duo were habitual offenders and showed their lively involvement in smuggling of ivory from Kerala. Train tickets seized from them proved that they travelled from Kottayam to Santragachi with the contraband. Sudheesh Chandra Babu sorted the procurement section in Kerala and Amitha was overseeing gross sales and supply of entire idols. tnn
