CHENNAI: Customs officers at Chennai global airport on Monday morning seized a horned pitviper, a toxic African snake and several other different endangered reptiles from the bag of a passenger who had arrived from Bangkok.
Apart from the viper, two Rhinoceros Iguana (Cyclura cornuta), 3 Rock Iguana (Cyclura Genus), 22 Egyptian Tortoise (Testudo kleinmani), 4 Blue Tongued Skink and 3 Green Tree Frogs (Genus hyla), an amphibian species were discovered within plastic packing containers in the passenger's bags.
The passenger, a 22-year-old Chennai pupil named Mohammad Abdul Majeed had arrived from from Bangkok by way of Thai Airways flight No. TG337.
The Horned Pit Viper is an African venomous snake and there is no anti venom available in India for it. Egyptian Tortoise is a severely endangered species and is endemic to Egypt and Libya.
The natural world species were seized under the provisions of Customs Act 1962. The passenger was detained. The seized natural world species might be sent back to Bangkok.
