COIMBATORE: After an opening of 7 years, the Nilgiris Mountain Rail on Saturday reintroduced the direct train carrier from Mettupalayam to Ooty.
It was run as a weekend particular to clear the summer time rush. It will be operational each and every Saturday till June 29. Based on the response, the railways may consider extending the operations on weekdays.
It has been a protracted pending call for from vacationers and students from the plains to reintroduce the carrier.

The train which will be pulled from Mettupalayam to Coonoor through steam engine. At Coonoor, they are going to exchange the steam engine with a diesel engine, which can pull the train until Ooty.
The railways stopped running Mettupalayam to Ooty trains in 2012, due to constant breakdowns they confronted on the course due to locomotive problems, said Natarajan.
