Process to reclaim 5,809 acre of janmam land in final stages

Udhagamandalam: The wooded area division is in the final stages of reclaiming about 5,809 acre of janmam land in Gudalur area in the Nilgiris, which used to be declared as wooded area land as according to the Settlement Officer's notification Rc.370/2011 dated August 3, 2011. Seven tea estate firms had taken the land on rent.

According to the district wooded area officer (Gudalur division), P K Dileep, a total of 17,014 acre of janmam land used to be declared as wooded area land below Section 53 of Gudalur Janmam Act as according to the Settlement Officer's notification in August 2011. Of this, the wooded area division had reclaimed 11,204 acre of land in 2011 itself.

Most the land up to now reclaimed by way of the wooded area division used to be loved by way of Manjushree Plantations, a Birla crew of corporate. "For the remaining land, the survey is almost over. Formal handing over of the land by the settlement officer will take place soon," Dileep advised TOI.

The land in query is loved by way of Parry Agro Industries Limited, Glenrock Estate, Roustan Malai estate, Tea Estate India Limited, Hindustan Unilever Ltd and Thiasholai Plantations. "As the lease period has expired long back, this is the government's logical consideration to take over the lands and hand it over to forest department," Dileep mentioned.

Over 80,000 acre of virgin land in Gudalur region in the Nilgiris comes below janmam category. In reality, the janmam land, particularly the virgin Shola forests positioned there-in, are an inseparable part of Western Ghats. By leasing out such land for tea plantations, the wooded area cover in the Nilgiris had declined to 20% of its unique area.
