Odisha govt recommends Election Commission of India to give 5% reservation to third genders in polls
BHUBANESWAR: Odisha govt on Thursday wrote to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to believe the call for of 3rd genders to provide five% reservation in elections. The 3rd gender community has been tough five% electoral reservation in Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, state assembly and urban-local body elections.
"It is requested to kindly consider the aforesaid demands of the Third Gender Surakshya Trust in the lights of the guidelines/rules formulated by the Election Commission of India," read the letter from state joint leader election commissioner, Bhabani Prasad Ray to ECI.
Odisha is the first state to make recommendations for reservation for 3rd genders to the ECI. The ECI had given popularity to the 3rd genders below "other" category in 2009 on poll paperwork. In 2014 the Supreme Court of India gave them formal popularity as 3rd genders and asked governments to believe them as socially and economically backward.
"Like other minority groups, third genders have been deprived of their rights and face severe discrimination, are tortured and treated badly in the society. Third genders should also be given reservation in the electoral system to put forth their demands in right perspective like it is given for women and SC and ST categories," mentioned secretary of T G Surakshya Trust, Pratap Sahu.
