COLOMBO: All 341 native councils of Sri Lanka could have a single-day polling in February, the rustic's election fee stated on Friday.
The polls would be the first key take a look at for the cohesion executive headed by President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe which is embroiled in a bitter infighting over a variety of issues.
The Sirisena faction of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party has been accused of delaying the election over fear of shedding by the faction led by former president Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The executive had postponed the elections for 341 native councils in the island nation since 2015 for electoral reforms.
In order to delay the polls by a year, the government proposed an amendment to the Constitution to carry elections for all 9 provincial councils on a unmarried day.
The Supreme Court in September ruled that the proposed 20th Amendment to the Constitution to carry council elections on a unmarried day requires two-third parliamentary majority and a national referendum.
But the government after all controlled to get all 341 native councils of Sri Lanka to have a single-day polling after a gaggle fighting against it withdrew its case.
"We are now in a position to have all election in one day," Mahinda Deshapriya, the Chief of the impartial Elections Commission stated on Friday.
Deshapriya stated he believes that the native election may now be held in February. This will be the first polls take a look at for the cohesion executive as they have got been postponing elections since 2015.
The allies have been having clashing over economic policy and on investigations into corruption underneath the regime of former president Rajapaksa, who could also be from the SLFP.
Sirisena's SLFP and Wickremesinghe's United National Party (UNP) have a coalition executive but contest the election one at a time.
The president's own celebration is divided between him. The SLFP is reportedly in talks with the Rajapaksa camp to unify to be able to defeat the UNP.
