12 killed in protests, attacks on security in Iran

TEHRAN: At least 12 people have been killed within the ongoing protests in Iran, and armed protesters have tried to take over police stations and army bases, state TV reported Monday.
The protests started Thursday in Mashhad over financial problems and feature since expanded to a number of towns. Hundreds of people have been arrested.

The state TV document said 10 have been killed during clashes Sunday evening, without elaborating. Two demonstrators have been killed during a protest in western Iran past due Saturday.


"Some armed protesters tried to take over some police stations and military bases but faced serious resistance from security forces," state TV reported.


Earlier Monday, the semi-official ILNA news company quoted Hedayatollah Khademi, a representative for the city of Izeh, as pronouncing two people died there Sunday evening.


He said the cause of death wasn't straight away identified. Many in Izeh, some 455 kilometers (280 miles) southwest of Tehran, have searching rifles in their properties.


On Sunday, Iran blocked access to Instagram and the popular messaging app Telegram utilized by activists to arrange. President Hassan Rouhani said the general public's anger over the Islamic Republic's flagging financial system, despite the fact that he and others warned that the federal government wouldn't hesitate to crack down on the ones it considers lawbreakers.
