Experts hail Budget; farmers, salaried class not so happy

Dharwad: A larger segment of the society welcomed the Union Budget presented by finance minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday with experts from different fields terming it pro-poor and pro-agriculture. However, there were also concerns over the federal government's sincerity in enforcing the programmes introduced in the Budget. As is their wont, BJP supporters hailed the Budget whilst those opposing the birthday party described it as full of promises which would not be learned.
Farmer leader Gangadhar Patilkulkarni stated that the finance minister was expected to waive farm loans got from nationalized banks, however there was no point out of it in the Budget. "Raising the institutional credit would not help the farmers in the long run and it will push them into debt trap. What the farmers want is remunerative price for their produce so that they are not compelled to go for loans," he stated.

S Ravindran, chairman, Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank, stated the Budget lays thrust on agricultural development, uplift of rural areas and employment technology. "Hike in institutional credit, minimum support price and introduction of 'Operation Green' will promote farming organizations and agri-logistics associations. In turn, this move will aid in removing middlemen and help in getting better price for the farm produces," Ravindran stated.

All those will pump in more cash into the economic system for productive functions and generate extra demand main to better financial growth, he opined.

Centre for Multidisciplinary Development Research director V B Annigeri stated that the Budget brings again "Roti, Kapada and Makaan" again at the agenda. "Two important elements of the social sector have been effectively provided with critical inputs which would go a long way in promoting the human capital formation in the economy. Integrated BEd programme for teachers and establishment of Ekalavya schools will help a lot," he stated.

The salaried class was upset as the tax exemption prohibit was not raised. "Increase in the standard deduction to Rs 40,000 is the only small relief," stated Shankar Shekhargol, a lecturer.
