Leprosy patients demand hike in monthly pension

BHUBANESWAR: Leprosy patients on Monday staged demonstration near state assembly right here challenging increase in their pension from Rs 300 per month to Rs 1000 for their survival.
Several patients underneath the aegis of Joint Action Committee of All Leprosy Organisations began their dharna on the Lower PMG to impose drive at the state executive to meet their demands.

Bipin Bihari Pradhan, state convener of the joint motion committee, stated the leprosy patients may just not earn money like commonplace folks. So they want special consideration from the state executive, he added.


“The state has around two lakh leprosy patients. Number of latest instances is arising every year. It isn't conceivable for a leprosy patient to run his family with a pension of Rs 300 per month. It must be higher to Rs 1000 per month. We also want free training and employment alternative to children of the patients,” he added.


Pradeep Pradhan, vice chairman of the joint motion committee, stated the health department has to take rapid steps to appoint leprosy workers, para-medical team of workers and docs in 14 leprosy hospitals and three Kusthashrams in the state. “The executive must consider the candidature of eligible children of the patients for leprosy worker posts,” he added.


He stated the state executive must provide land patta (file of rights of the land) and monetary lend a hand to the leprosy patients for construction of their properties. “Government gives Rs 50 according to head daily as meals allowances to the population of 3 leprosy homes at Cuttack, Sambalpur and Balasore. We urge the federal government to extend it to Rs 100 according to head,” he added.


Health minister Pratap Jena stated no one has contacted with him about the problem. “If I am getting grievance about team of workers scarcity in leprosy homes or increase in pension of the patients, I will be able to certainly look into the topic,” he added.
