NEW DELHI: A gaggle of Jamia Millia Islamia students allegedly raised ‘provocative’ slogans relating to Pakistan founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah within the campus on Tuesday, leading to a ruckus at the campus gates. The incident followed the row at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Uttar Pradesh over the presence of a portrait of Jinnah of their campus.
Around 25 folks marched to protest the “discrimination towards Hindu students”, and the “presence of Jinnah fanatics” within the campus. The protesters reached the Jamia campus round five.30 pm, when semester assessments and front exams have been still underway.
“They have been raising slogans like ‘Jinnah premi desh chhoro’ (Jinnah fanatics depart the rustic), and ‘Hinduon ka apmaan nahi sahega Hindustan’ (Hindustan won’t tolerate insult towards Hindus),” said Mohammad Tasleem, a scholar TOI spoke to. “Some of the students were given angry at the allegations that the people at Jamia disrespect the Hindu students. This led to an issue and a scuffle took place.”
Some students alleged that all of the protesters have been from Jamia. “Most of them have been outsiders. Exams are going on within the college, and their purpose was to disrupt the atmosphere,” said Laraib Ahmed, a 2d 12 months masters scholar.
