MANGALURU: Miffed with the BJP denying his son Ranjan Gowda a ticket in Belthangady Assembly constituency, veteran flesh presser Gangadhar Gowda returned to his guardian birthday party, the Congress, within the presence of minister D Ok Shivakumar on Wednesday in Belthangady.
His son, Ranjan, however, advised TOI that he would proceed to paintings for the BJP and that his father’s determination to change over used to be his “private” one.
Gangadhar had tasted success in his electoral debut in 1978. Representing the Congress (I), he had polled 31,255 votes towards Ok Chidanand from the Janata Party who had secured 21,388 votes. He lost the election in 1983 to Ok Vasanth Bangera, who's now the Congress candidate but then represented the BJP, by way of 8,919 votes.
Not contesting the following Assembly election, Gangadhar made a comeback in 1989 by way of registering a victory towards Bangera, who had converted to the JD(S), by way of a narrow margin of one,210 votes. The 1994 elections used to be a three-cornered fight between Gangadhar from the Congress, Vasanth Bangera representing the JD(S) and Prabhakar Bangera from the BJP. Vasanth Bangera again emerged victorious.
Gangadhar’s shedding streak endured and he used to be defeated within the 1999 and 2008 Assembly elections. He hadn’t entered the ballot fray in 2004. In 2013, the BJP determined to field Ranjan within the fray towards the seasoned Vasanth Bangera. The veteran Bangera registered a comprehensive victory of 15,741 votes. Gangadhar used to be on Wednesday seen preserving Bangera’s fingers as they waved to a packed crowd.
