BENGALURU: About 30 sorts of mangoes, the ‘king of culmination’, will be up for grabs at Lalbagh from Friday. Also as a part of the three-week annual Mango and Jackfruit Mela, the department of horticulture and the Karnataka State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation Ltd will arrange 22 stalls to display and sell the fruit at main Metro stations.
Over 90 stalls — 80 for mango growers and 10 for jackfruit growers who will sell 12 sorts of the fruit — will be arrange in Lalbagh.
“Last 12 months, we had stalls at 4 Metro stations and the reaction used to be excellent,” said an official. Ten stalls can also be arrange at the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) administrative center on KG Road and 10 at Cubbon Park. For the primary time, a kiosk will be arrange at Lalbagh, allowing visitors to fee the quality of culmination sold and upkeep of cleanliness at the mela. Bills will be generated thru text messages.
Mango manufacturing down
Mangoes are grown on 1.78 lakh hectares of land in the state, with an estimated yield of 12-14 lakh tonnes. However, since this is an 'off' 12 months, with possibilities of not on time fruiting, the yield has fallen to 8-10 lakh tonnes. This is the explanation why the mango mela, which is normally scheduled in the first week of May, is being held now. Officials say the retail prices at the mela will be determined through Thursday evening.
The board, which used to be hoping to increase exports this 12 months, will now have to attend another 12 months. “Last 12 months, we had exported just about 10,000 tonnes of mangoes to quite a lot of nations including Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and the USA,” said KM Parashivamurthy, further director, horticulture department.
“Since then, the selection of farmers who acquired the Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certificates, which is vital to export produce, has larger from 200 to one,200. So we have been hoping to increase exports, but this is probably not possible this 12 months,” he added.
