Mumbai: Prof booked on 'molestation' charge

MUMBAI: The Matunga police on Monday registered an FIR towards the professor of a prominent engineering faculty in central Mumbai after his pupil complained of sexual harassment.
Though the incident took place on May 18, the woman had submitted a complaint letter best to the institute. The institute’s officials passed over the letter to the police on Monday allegedly after political outfits put force on them for no longer taking any action.


The professor was once booked for sexual harassment. “We have registered an FIR towards the professor (title withheld) beneath the IPC sections of 354 and 354 A and are investigating the subject. We will summon the professor,” stated Bala Kakkad, senior inspector of Matunga police.


The institute’s director instructed TOI that they gave the woman’s complaint letter to the police on Monday and will lend a hand them with no matter is needed. “The institute conducts particular classes in the summertime for weaker students. The professor has been requested to not take these classes for now. The interior complaints committee from the institute, which is also probing the subject, is but to post its file.


We will take action according to the panel’s file,” stated the director. The first-year engineering pupil had alleged that the senior professor, beneath the pretext of signing her summer term form, made her look ahead to over two hours after which called her in his cabin post 5pm on May 18. He allegedly pulled her towards him and molested her, she stated.


The professor even threatened to fail her if she didn't concentrate to him, claimed the woman. She ran house from there and came together with her oldsters tomorrow to give hotel a complaint with the institute. Last week, Amol Matele, from Nationalist Students’ Congress, requested the institute to behave towards the professor.


On Monday, the gang staged a protest. Matele alleged that the woman was once called through the institute’s officials on May 25 for a probe, on the other hand, no contributors from the women’s construction cell were present. Yuva Sena, led through Aditya Thackeray, also took up the subject with the institute and senior police officials. Activists alleged the varsity didn't act at the complaint for 10 days.
