HYDERABAD: The tussle between Army and civilians in Secunderabad Cantonment area over closure of a few roads is getting uglier by the day. On Friday morning, a lot to the chagrin of voters, jawans carried out workouts on roads that have been to be thrown open to civilians. The message was once transparent — These roads belong to us and there’s no approach we will open them to the public.
After jawans blocked roads for a few hours and stalled vehicular and pedestrian movement, the Green Sainikpuri Federation of North East Colonies of Secunderabad posted photos of jawans exercising on roads and tweeted to defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman, announcing civilians dwelling in Secunderabad Cantonment area are ‘really scared of the present situation’.
Jeetender Surana, vicepresident of Cantt-India, informed TOI, “For previous two days, cars are being stopped near Golf Course in Bollarum. They are doing it intentionally to make public pick out an argument with them. They also are retaining video cameras. Our high influence of the military is changing. This sends the fallacious sign. They have closed Eagle Chowk Road. Everywhere at the roads, they are challenging Aadhaar cards and RC books like police. They are not following orders issued by the defence ministry. Instead of ensuring a cordial dating, they are instigating public.”
The Local Military Authority despite orders from the defence ministry has now not utterly opened roads, resulting in an outcry from civilians. One S Anoop Kumar, who posted photos of army jawans on his twitter account, wrote, “Armymen doing bodily workouts at the major roads disrupting the traffic, retaining passersby, causing prolong resulting in frustration and outburst.”
Policy analyst and academician Mohan Guruswamy on his Facebook put up stated, “The Army in Secunderabad is leading jawans to workout at the recently opened roads to disrupt traffic. It is downright silly bearing in mind the roads run through huge open grounds, over 300 acres, maintained by the federal government as coaching spaces. The simplest entry to jawans here's when they are required to scrub and lawn the 2 Golf Courses. In all my years here, I have by no means seen jawans on these roads except for when they are tending to Golf Courses and the huge gardens of bungalows. Even retired officers avail of services of jawans in my neighbourhood. Don't challenge me, I can put up the footage. The LMA must stop being childish and take a look at to seek a constructive resolution(sic).”
When contacted, defence spokesperson refused to comment whilst the Local Military Authority was once now not available for comment.
Meanwhile, retired Lt General HS Panag, in enhance of the military, tweeted, “Long distance march and 2.5 km/5 km run cannot be carried out in unit spaces. Since occasions immemorial carried out on Cantt Roads.”
