MYSURU: Buying a Mysuru Silk sari in most cases involves months of making plans and saving up for many families. This Varamahalakshmi, even though, the government has announced a present upfront - the famed, GI-tagged saris will come for a worth as low as Rs 4,500.
Sericulture and tourism minister SR Mahesh said on Friday that retailers of Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation will promote the saris at low charges at the festival day - August 24 - following a demand from folks to fabricate Mysuru Silk that is reasonably priced to the middle and lower middle-income teams.
"The sale will be restricted to one day but the corporation is ready to cater to the demand," Mahesh informed newshounds on the Mysuru District Journalists' Association. A pure Mysuru Silk sari prices upwards of Rs 12,000 and the fee can go as much as Rs 1 lakh.
Mahesh said the government will not spare any dealer or institution or trade established order selling faux saris within the name of Mysuru Silk. "Our silk sari is patented and any misuse of the name will not be tolerated, not just in Karnataka but across India," he said.
KSIC is the only manufacturer of Mysuru Silk and the saris are offered at its retailers in south Karnataka, Chennai and Hyderabad. There are 18 KSIC retailers in all, together with eight in Bengaluru, six in Mysuru, and one each in Chennai and Hyderabad. Following top demand, retailers would come up at Lalitha Mahal Palace, KRS and Badami, Mahesh said.
Cocoon market soon
Mysuru will soon have a silk cocoon market at the lines of Ramanagara, the sericulture minister said. The website would be recognized and the project taken up on the earliest to lend a hand silk farmers within the area, he said.
