Police tighten probe against government officials in gutka unit case

COIMBATORE: The rural police have intensified their inquiry against the previous govt officer (EO) of Kannampalayam the town panchayat and an officer from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Coimbatore, in reference to the illegal gutka manufacturing unit case.

According to police sources, the state govt banned gross sales and manufacturing of gutkha merchandise in 2012.

In 2013, FSSAI officials raided a couple of stores in Tirupur and located gutka. Immediately, the officials registered a case and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each and every at the illegal gutkha unit supervisor Raghuram and proprietor Amit Singh of New Delhi. While Raghuram had paid the fine quantity, Amit Singh is yet to pay the quantity. The case remains to be pending ahead of the FSSAI.

The Coimbatore rural police are recently reinvestigating the case. Police said Raghuram had given pretend address to the officials then.

The FSSAI officials had failed to assemble full information about Raghuram and Amit Singh. So, the duo continued to perform the unit and manufacture gutka. They had even bought license from FSSAI to make pan masala.

“A couple of officials from FSSAI, Coimbatore, had visited the illegal gutka manufacturing unit at Kannampalayam since 2013. But that they had failed to determine the gutkha manufacturing unit. Now, the police have started investigation against the officials,” said a police supply.


“We have requested the Kannampalayam the town panchayat officials to put up the answer details to us. If officials are involved within the case, then they'll even be arrested,” said a police officer.


On April 27, a police group raided the illegal gutka manufacturing unit at Kannampalayam and seized 3.24 lakh sachets of gutka, pan masala and uncooked materials from the unit. Police arrested Raghuram and three migrant labourers in reference to the case.


Later, former president of Kannampalayam the town panchayat Thalapathi Murugesan was also arrested through the police.
